EVERGREEN, Colo. — At least three students, including the suspect, were shot and critically wounded inside Evergreen High School Wednesday.
All three juveniles were transported to CommonSpirit St. Anthony Health Center in Lakewood and are in critical condition, according to hospital officials, who added that the hospital is coordinating with the sheriff's office and the school district to contact families.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said the suspect, who has yet to be identified, used an unspecified type of handgun. It's not known at this time how the suspect sustained a gunshot wound.
We have live team coverage in the video player below:
The sheriff's office issued an alert for an "active assailant" in the area of Evergreen High School at 12:40 p.m.
The school has more than 900 students enrolled.
The alert from @jeffcom911 urged parents not to go directly to the school as it is still an "active scene."
Instead, authorities have established a reunification point at Bergen Meadow Elementary, 1928 S. Hiwan Drive.
Jacki Kelley, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office, told Denver7 that officers were conducting a room-by-room search of the school to ensure no other suspects or devices were involved.
More than 100 law enforcement officers from around the region are on scene assisting the sheriff's office.
Kelley said the first 911 call came in at 12:24 p.m., and the sheriff's office believes the shooting occurred inside the school.
Gov. Jared Polis released the following statement:
“I am closely monitoring the situation at Evergreen High School, and am getting live updates. State Troopers are supporting local law enforcement in responding to this situation. Students should be able to attend school safely and without fear across our state and nation. We are all praying for the victims and the entire community."
No other details were immediately available.
