Chilly weather hung around again for the Front Range today, but even colder weather will arrive this weekend.
A bitter cold air mass remains entrenched over the center of the United States, including eastern Colorado! Temperatures stayed in the single digits across the Northern Great Plains during the day and will tumble well below zero by early Thursday.
Here in Colorado, the cold air is mostly along and east of I-25, with the coldest air in the northeast corner of the state.
The very cold air is heavy and dense and does not flow uphill very easily so the mountains are not as cold, with readings in the 20 and 30s. The mountains will have some snow showers off and on through the end of the week, with 4 to 8 inches of snow this weekend.
On Friday, the colder air will begin to surge southwest across more of Colorado. Temperatures will drop into the teens and 20s for highs Friday and then plunge through the weekend to some of the coldest weather we have seen in a few years in February. Lows may tumble to 5 to 10 degrees below zero by Saturday and Sunday morning!
Along with bitter cold, there will be snow, amounts in Denver will likely be 2 to 4 inches, mainly Saturday afternoon through Sunday midday. In the mountains 6 to 12 inches of snow will be likely through the weekend.
Temperatures will stay cold on Sunday and early Monday and then will moderate early week, climbing back to the upper 20s on Monday and near 35 degrees on Tuesday.
More snow will be possible by late Tuesday into Wednesday, but temperatures will not be nearly as cold.
