WATCH: Boulder longboarder reaches 70 mph speeds

Posted

A crazy video posted by a Boulder downhill longboarder has gotten more than a million YouTube views. The video shows professional longboarder Zak Maytum reaching speeds of 60, even 70 miles per hour!

7NEWS reporter Kristen Skovira met the man behind the mask and he said all of the attention is a bit surprising. Maytum, 24, said he posts videos like this pretty frequently, but has never seen this kind of internet response.

He wants people to know it has taken him years to get this good and for the record, he is wearing a helmet!

“When I was in high school a few of my friends got longboards and they started bombing little hills around town. I went out to do that with them, but I only had a regular skateboard so I couldn't keep up,” he said.

Maytum has no trouble keeping up now.

The video shows him cruising down a mountain roadway at almost 70 miles per hour.

“That's not uncommon for us. On a World Cup track in 2015, almost every course goes 60 mph at least once. You really don't notice it that much anymore. Once you know you can stop and you are in control, you relax a lot and are just thinking about what's coming up down the road,” said Maytum.

Make no mistake, downhill skateboarding is illegal in most places, but that doesn't stop adrenaline enthusiasts.

“The fine is for ‘toy on a road,’,” he said, “The fine ranges from 18 to 26 dollars.”

So where is this 'perfect' hill exactly?

“Anybody who has any business riding there knows where it is,” he said.
