CENTENNIAL, Colo. -- Thankful is a relative term in the NFL at this point of the season. The Broncos sit at 3-7, but remain thankful for the opportunity to find out about young players and if the quarterback of the future is on their roster.
As Paxton Lynch makes his season debut, the Broncos need a win anywhere. They are 5-11 over their last 16 games, in part, because they sit on the shoulder with hazards flashing.
Denver owns a six-game road losing streak, and hasn't won an AFC West road game since Peyton Manning retired.
"Our concern now is the Broncos. It doesn't matter where we play. We need a clean game," coach Vance Joseph said Thursday. "Even being two-plus in turnovers, that's what we need. ... No turnovers, I would be really thankful for that."
The Broncos rank 31st in turnover margin. Their quarterbacks have thrown 14 picks, second worst in the NFL.
Doss cut
The Broncos ran out of patience with cornerback Lorenzo Doss, cutting him Thursday as first reported by Denver7. The cornerback made plays in training camp in back-to-back summers, but failed to progress this season. He fell behind rookie Brendan Langley on the depth chart.
Asked why Doss was waived, Joseph offered a curt reply.
"We are trying to get better as a football team," Joseph said.
The Broncos have waived three players over the past two weeks: Kasim Edebali, A.J. Derby and Doss.
Footnotes
Defensive tackle Adam Gotis (ankle) did not participate in practice, but the Broncos remain hopeful he will play Sunday. Linebacker Shane Ray (ankle/wrist), receiver Emmanuel Sanders (ankle) and tight end Jeff Heuerman (knee) were limited. ... The Broncos will face a familiar defensive coordinator in John Pagano, who took over for the fired Ken Norton Jr. this week. The move did not go over well in the Raiders' locker room. Pagano, a longtime defensive boss in San Diego, is known for his blitz packages.
