WESTMINSTER, Colo. — A suspect was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Westminster on Thursday evening, police said.

Officers went to the 6900 block of Stuart Street to serve a warrant around 5:40 p.m. Police said the suspect was a 38-year-old white man, who was wanted out of Lakewood for second-degree assault, first-degree burglary and felony menacing. Officers announced their presence before entering his apartment and once inside, found the man armed in a small bedroom. He ignored the officer's commands and moved the gun in the direction of officers, according to police.

Two police sergeants fired their guns, striking the suspect. Paramedics then responded to the scene to begin administering life-saving measures. The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he died, according to Investigator Cheri Spottke with the police department. The suspect's name has not been released.

Police said it was unclear if the suspect fired the gun.

At the time of the shooting, several other adults and a juvenile female were inside the apartment. They were not injured.

Police were not injured. The police department said this is the first officer-involved shooting that the two sergeants had been a part of.

Police were still investigating the shooting Friday. The Westminster officers who fired their guns were not wearing body cameras, as Westminster police does not have them.

This incident is being investigated by the 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Investigation Team.
