LOVELAND, Colo. — Police in Loveland are looking for a suspect or suspects who vandalized a make-shift memorial honoring Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated last week in Utah.
The incident occurred on Saturday, just before midnight, in the 200 block of E. 23rd Street.
Police said a lawn display honoring the conservative activist was set on fire, and a rock was thrown through the rear window of the resident’s vehicle.
The display included a sign reading, “RIP Charlie Kirk, we stand with you,” and was surrounded by American flags, according to police.
Police stated that the incident appears to be politically motivated.
Kirk was shot and killed on Wednesday while speaking at Utah Valley University. The 22-year-old accused in the killing, Tyler Robinson, is in FBI custody.
“Detectives will relentlessly pursue this case until the culprit is apprehended. What is particularly troubling about this incident is the chilling effect this arsonist is attempting to impact on free speech and expression. We will not abide criminal conduct in our city, whether it be Tesla bombing terrorists, those setting fire to memorials like this, or any other heinous offenses in between. The Loveland Police Department is committed to protecting and serving our residents without favor or bias,” said Loveland Police Chief Tim Doran in a statement.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Loveland Police Department at 970-667-2151 or Larimer County Crime Stoppers at 970-221-6868.
