DENVER – An elk giving birth on Lookout Mountain captivated thousands on our Facebook page Tuesday.
The cow was spotted by our remote-controlled camera Tuesday evening. It’s situated on our broadcast tower atop Lookout Mountain and was streamed live for several hours.
During the intensely-watched live broadcast, the calf’s hooves were seen protruding from the mother, but the outcome of the actual birth is unknown at this time as the cow moved off screen late Tuesday evening.
Cows usually give birth around this time of year, and their offspring can stand on their own shortly after.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife tweeted that Colorado "boasts the largest elk herds in the world, and the birthing process happens naturally thousands of times per year... We are lucky to get this rare glimpse into the natural world, but it is critical to let nature take its course and not intervene in the process."
