GUNNISON, Colo. – Two hunters have pleaded guilty in the illegal killing of a moose this month in southwest Colorado, officials said.

Susan Boyles, 67, and Donald Boyles, 68, paid fines of nearly $2,000 in the incident, which happened on Oct. 4 south of Lake City in Hinsdale County. Susan Boyles shot the cow moose on private property near Lake San Cristobal, according to the Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Boyles had a valid moose license, but hunting is not allowed on the property where she shot the moose.

She was charged with hunting on private property and unlawful take of wildlife. Her husband was charged with hunting/trespassing without permission.

The Mesa County couple "did express remorse" for the killing, said J. Wenum, the wildlife manager in Gunnison. They told officials that they did not see a "no hunting" or "no trespassing" signs on the property. They reported seeing two calves near the moose, but fortunately the calves had been weaned off their mother, officials said.

The Boyles will go through a CPW hearing to determine how long their hunting and fishing licenses could be suspended.
