DENVER — The conditions along Interstate 70 in the mountains weren't too good on Sunday, and with more snow expected in the afternoon, officials were warning skiers and snowboarders to stay put, if they can.
Safety closures and heavy traffic were expected for the drive back to the Denver area later Sunday afternoon, after lifts at the packed ski resorts close. The Colorado Department of Transportation was already recommending that skiers and snowboarders to stay overnight Sunday and wait until Monday to travel along the highway.
CDOT was sending snow plows out in shifts throughout Sunday. There was also some avalanche mitigation being done near Loveland Pass, though no more mitigation was planned for the rest of the. The state traction law was also in effect through the mountains.
Traffic was bad enough on I-70 on Saturday morning, when the roads were in better shape and as thousands headed to ski resorts following a week of fresh powder. But another round of snow overnight Saturday and into Sunday made the roads slushy and icy, and the conditions were only expected to worsen with more snow and dropping temperatures.
