ELIZABETH — The livelihood and safety of more than 70 horses, mules and donkeys have been at risk at Journey with Equus Sanctuary.
The land owner in Elizabeth decided to sell, threatening the sanctuary's future. The founder of the rescue, Candice Ensign, contacted Denver7 for help.
Ensign said her animals are "misfits."
"Before they come here, they are completely disposable," Ensign said. "When they don’t serve their purpose anymore, when they’re not going bring in money or they’re injured, they're just let go. Throw them away."
Something amazing happened after the story first aired on Denver7 in November.
"Social media blew up," Ensign said. "My phone blew up and I'm so grateful for that."
Many generous donors helped Ensign raise more than $58,000 and counting.
"Thanks to Channel 7 viewers and supporters," Ensign said."You literally saved us and I don't take that lightly. It's very emotional for me."
Even better news, the owner next door graciously made a deal with Ensign to purchase 120 acres of land.
Ensign said she will use the money recently raised to build new shelters and to conduct other essential jobs to help her animals thrive.
