DENVER — Sky Williford’s life was changed when a thief stole her only mode of transportation, her scooter. Thanks to the generosity of Denver7 viewers, her life was once again changed, this time for the better.
Last week, security camera video showed a man walking up the driveway of Williford’s Glendale home, and leaving with her 50cc scooter. It was the only was that Sky, who has a disability, could get to and from her job at King Soopers.
“Really disappointed and angry at the same time that someone just did this,” Williford said. “It means everything to me because my family gave it to me.”
“She can’t afford to replace it,” her mom Cynthia said.
Denver7 viewers immediately responded by donating to Denver7 Gives.
On Thursday, Sky and her family came to Sportique Scooters in Denver for what they thought was a follow-up story to try to raise more money. She picked out her favorite scooter on the showroom floor, and then Denver7’s Jason Gruenauer had a big surprise for her.
“One Denver7 viewer has generously offered to buy you the scooter of your choice,” Gruenauer said.
“Surprised. Shocked.,” Williford said. “Speechless.”
“That’s too great,” her mom said.
A single viewer had offered to buy a new ride. Williford had picked a bright green 50cc scooter to replace her black one that was stolen.
“I mean, I’m surprised. So happy that someone helped me out and got me a new scooter,” she said.
“It was so wonderful that someone reached out to help her in her time of need,” her mom added.
But the surprises didn’t end there. Donations made from other Denver7 viewers to the Denver7 Gives Fund were used to buy Williford a new trunk for her scooter to hold her groceries, a new lock, and a helmet. She picked one painted bright pink with glitter.
“Without Denver7 Gives I have no clue how we would be been able to help my daughter through this time,” her mom said.
Sportique Scooters offered all sales at cost to make sure Williford got everything she needed. Thanks to the generosity of Colorado, a young woman was given her independence back.
“It really did change my life again,” Williford said.
