7Everyday Hero helped save 3,000 cattle dogs from high kill shelters, adopt them to new homes

If you don't believe in second chances, New Hope Cattle Dogs Rescue may just change your mind.

The rescue was created in 2005 to save the dogs from high kill shelters and find new homes for them.

"When people ask who runs New Hope Cattle Dog Rescue, I kind of giggle when they think it's me, because it's really Sue," said Founder Paula Wilderman.

Sue Hendrick is a volunteer with the organization. And she loves cattle dogs.

"I'll tell you — if you understand them, they're probably the best breed," she said.

Wilderman said the dogs don't need to be out on a ranch herding cattle, but are very active dogs and need a source of exercise.

That's where Hendrick comes in. She began volunteering 10 years ago after her own foster dog was adopted to another home.

"I was so devastated," she said. "I fell in love with that dog so much, but then I realized, if I keep doing this over and over I can save another."

Since then, Hendrick has helped re-home more than 3,000 cattle dogs. As the intake and foster coordinator, she spends countless hours arranging the rescue and transportation of the dogs. Her work takes her across Colorado and sometimes, the country.

"It's just kind of addicting," she said.

Wilderman said Hendrick treats each dog as if it were her own.

"I can't even imagine how many miles she's put on her car," Wilderman said.

Just like the dogs she saves, Hendrick's energy is endless. Not a call goes out that she doesn't answer, even on the holiday.

"But you know what, we're kind of speaking up for those who can't," Hendrick said.

And although all of her time is volunteered, her payback is seeing the dogs get a second shot at a new life.

"Sue's an every hour hero, Sue's an every minute hero. She's just — she's amazing," Wilderman said.
