DENVER —

A cold front is bringing cooler air and much needed moisture across Colorado. Thunderstorms and showers continue across the eastern plains and in the mountains. The stronger storms have moved away from the Denver area, but some light showers will linger into Thursday morning along with some areas of fog.

This front will bring a nice change for Thursday. Temperatures will drop into the upper 70s to low 80s, with some morning showers in Denver, followed by clearing skies.

Thanks to our just ended heatwave, we had nine straight days in the 90s, which set a new record for consecutive days for September and tied the record for the number of 90-degree days for the entire month.

We have now had 59 days that are more than 90 degrees this summer, which ranks us in the top five hottest summers in Denver. We are sitting at No. 4 for highest number of 90-degree days. The all-time record for 90s was 73 days in 2012.

Friday through the weekend will be fantastic! Sunny skies, warm temperatures — but not too hot with highs in the 70s on Friday. In the mountains, expect blue skies and highs in the 60s.

By Saturday, temperatures will warm up again with highs in the low to mid-80s for Denver and 70s in the mountains. Autumn officially starts at 7:54 p.m. on Saturday. The weather should be very pleasant with sunny skies and temperatures warming to the upper 80s on Sunday.

The aspens are really pretty in the northern and central mountains! It is a nice time to get up to the high country and enjoy the annual display of aspen gold, especially in areas along and north of I-70.  Southern mountain areas will be reaching peak color in another seven to 10 days.

Early next week a stronger cold front will push into the state with showers likely on Tuesday and maybe a little snow for the mountains! Highs will be in the 60s in Denver with 40s to low 50s in the high country.
