DENVER -- First Alert Action Day in effect for hot and dry weather that will cover Colorado for another day. Expect triple digit temperatures in Denver and across the eastern plains and little, if any moisture. The FIRE DANGER is high across virtually all of Colorado!
Temperatures Wednesday reached 101 degrees in Denver, 105 to 110 degrees over southeastern Colorado and around 103 in the Grand Junction area. The Denver record high for June 27th in Denver is 102 degrees, set in 1990.
The air is hot at the surface and warm and dry aloft, so there is little moisture or instability to create rain. Expect some clouds and gusty thunderstorms along the Front Range and northeast plains. The storms will end with clearing skies and a bright full moon overnight.
Denver did not reach the record for Wednesday, but should on Thursday! If the high reaches 100 degrees on Thursday, it will set a new record - beating the old mark of 99 degrees, set in 1986. We are predicting readings in the low 100s Thursday afternoon.
Even in the mountains it is hot with highs in the 80s for locations around 10,000 feet! At least it gets cooler at night as temperatures will fall to the 40s to low 50s in the mountains and upper 50s to mid-60s on the plains under that bright full moon.
Also remember to NEVER leave a child or a pet inside of a parked car during this heatwave. A close up vehicle car quickly warm to 120 degrees in just a few minutes!
Some cooler weather will settle in for the weekend and there will be a better chance of storms on Saturday and Sunday. Highs will drop back into the 80s to low 90s on the plains and 70s in the mountains.
More hot and dry weather will return to Colorado early next week.
