DENVER — A cold front slipped across Colorado early Tuesday and brought some welcome relief from the record heat of Sunday and Monday. Highs were in the low to mid-80s under partly cloudy skies. The humidity was higher, but overall the weather was more comfortable.
Some scattered thunderstorms developed in the central mountains and the foothills west of Denver. The Denver metro area and eastern plains stayed dry. Lows tonight will be in the upper 50s to low 60s in the Denver area, with upper 40s to low 50s in the mountains.
Wednesday will be hotter again, with highs around 90 degrees. Some thunderstorms will be possible in the afternoon.
Thursday will be a drier day with highs in the low 90s and only a slight chance for thunderstorms.
There will be a better chance for showers and thunderstorms Friday with cooler temperatures around 80 degrees. The weekend looks to be drier and quite pleasant.
The average high temperatures in early September are in the lower 80s, so we are on the tail end of the summer heat. Thunderstorm chances also begin to lessen at this time of year as the sun angle is lower in the sky and the upper atmosphere is warmer, which provides less vertical instability.
Leaves are just beginning to change in the mountains and it will not be too long before the annual golden glory of our aspen trees begins to really shine in the high country!
