Pockets of heavy rain, storms possible in Colorado each afternoon this week

DENVER — It's going to be another quiet start to the day, but a few more thunderstorms are possible this afternoon. In fact, we will see a chance of storms each afternoon this week... very typical in late July to see this pattern!

Light winds aloft, combined with fairly high humidity (for Colorado), mean a daily dose of downpours for Colorado. The storms are slow moving and scattered, but if they pass over your location, they will be a good gully-washer.

The light winds aloft mean there is little wind shear that would lead to dangerous "super-cell" thunderstorms, so the threat for tornadoes is low. However, it also means that the storms will not move away very fast, so local flooding will be the main threat, along with loads of lightning.

This weather pattern will linger through the week, so expect sunny mornings, building mid-day clouds and late afternoon and evening thunderstorms through at least Friday.

Highs will be in the upper 80s to low 90s on the plains and in the 70s to low 80s in the mountains. Nighttime lows will be in the upper 50s to mid 60s for lower elevations and in the 40s to low 50s in the mountains.
