DENVER — The streak of 90-degree heat continued Tuesday with highs in the low 90s. Denver reached 91 degrees, a little shy of the record of 93 degrees, set way back in 1895.
Since last Monday, we have either tied or broken five record highs — that is five records in eight days! In September, there have been nine straight days in the 90s, which is a new record for consecutive days for this month and ties the record for the number of 90-degree days for the entire month.
We have now had 59 days that are more than 90 degrees this summer, which ranks us in the top five hottest summers in Denver. We are sitting at No. 4 for highest number of 90-degree days. The all-time record for 90s was 73 days in 2012.
The heat is about to break as a cold front will move into the state on Wednesday. The front will bring a chance for afternoon and evening thunderstorms and highs in the upper 80s. There could even be a little severe weather with 60 mph winds and one inch hail across the northeastern corner of the state.
This cold front will bring a nice change by Thursday. Temperatures will drop into the upper 70s with a slight chance for morning showers, followed by clearing.
Friday through the weekend will be fantastic! Sunny skies, warm temperatures — but not too hot with highs in the 70s on Friday. In the mountains, expect blue skies and highs in the 60s.
By the weekend, temperatures will warm up again with highs in the 80s for Denver and 70s in the mountains. The weather should be very pleasant with sunny skies.
The aspens are really pretty in the northern and central mountains! It is a nice time to get up to the high country and enjoy the annual display of aspen gold, especially in areas along and north of I-70. Southern mountain areas will be reaching peak color in another seven to 10 days.
Early next week a stronger cold front will push into the state with showers likely on Tuesday and maybe a little snow for the mountains! Highs will be in the 60s in Denver with 40s to low 50s in the high country.
