DENVER — A Winter Storm Warning is in effect through Wednesday morning for the western and southern portions of the Denver metro area for cold and snow.

An early taste of winter arrived with a powerful cold front that raced south across Colorado with tumbling temperatures and snow.
Air temperatures are cold, but the pavement is still warm, so much of the snow will melt on impact on streets, however accumulating snow is likely especially over higher terrain and the foothills this afternoon and tonight.
The I-25 corridor and metro area may see enough heavy, wet snow, to break tree limbs and cause power outages. Roads could become slippery and slushy across higher terrain west and south of Denver and in the mountains.

The northern and central mountains and the foothills west of Denver may see a few more inches of snow through early Wednesday. The cold and snow will be a huge help to fire fighters fighting the Cameron Peak Fire west of Fort Collins.
Denver and the eastern plains will see very cold weather tonight with lows in the upper 20s! Another one to three inches of snow may fall around Denver - especially for the western and southern suburbs.
Cold temperatures make it important to protect sensitive plants and cover exposed pipes. The underground part of the sprinkler system will be fine, due to the warmth in the soil.
On Wednesday, highs will be in the 40s, then 50s on Thursday. Scattered rain showers will still be possible on Thursday.
Skies will clear for the end of the week with a warming trend starting. Expect highs in the 70s on Friday and Saturday and finally low 80s by Sunday.
