DENVER — It's a First Alert Action Day because it is going to get extremely windy today and will stay windy through the evening.

Expect gusts as high as 50 mph for the metro area and 70 mph for the plains and foothills.

The mountains are now picking up more snow, which will continue through Friday. A winter storm warning has been issued for the southwestern mountains, with more than a foot of snow possible tonight. The northern and central mountains are under a winter weather advisory for 5 to 10 inches of fresh powder for weekend skiing.

This storm will be a dry one for the Denver metro area, but we may see a few light rain/snow showers across the northeastern plains tomorrow. Winds will be the bigger issue. Highs will stay in the low to mid 50s tomorrow afternoon. A High Wind Warning begins Friday afternoon for the metro and Front Range for strong wind gusts. The warning expires Saturday morning.

Very mild if you're heading downtown for the National Western Stock Show. It will be calmer, mostly sunny and mild on Saturday and Sunday.
