A weak cold front slipped into eastern Colorado early Wednesday and brought a brief break from the most recent string of 90 degree days. Highs hit the 90s Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, but only peaked in the middle 80s Wednesday afternoon. Do not get used to the cooler weather as most of the next seven days will be hot!
So far in 2021, Denver has reached 90 degrees or hotter 48 times and 100 or hotter 5 times. Expect more days in the 90s for the next several days into next week, although triple digits are only expected over the southeast corner of Colorado.
The smoke actually increased a bit over Denver and the northeast plains, but not nearly as bad as things were a week or two ago. There is an ozone action day alert in effect for Denver and the I-25 Corridor. Ozone is invisible, but it is an irritant to the lungs, so take it easy if you have heart or respiratory problems. Try to avoid using gas powered mowers and trimmers during the heat of the day and limit your driving as much as possible.
The hot weather will return Thursday with highs back around 90 degrees. There will be some afternoon thunderstorms as a weak weather disturbance will cross the state. Friday and Saturday will feature a few thunderstorms, with continued hot temperatures in the lower 90s.
Sunday will be a little cooler in the wake of a weak cold front. There may be a few showers early followed by mostly sunny skies. Highs will drop back into the middle to upper 80s for the Denver area.
Early next week will be hot and dry with highs in the mid-to upper 90s and an increase in wildfire smoke.
