DENVER — The first week of June has been a hot one and that trend will continue for a couple more days. Denver's average high this time of year is in the upper 70s, readings have been in the high 80s to low 90s for the last few days. There will be more heat Friday through Sunday, followed by a nice cooling trend early next week.
The current weather pattern continues to feature mostly sunny skies to start the day and late afternoon and evening thunderstorms to finish it. Highs will continue well above normal for early June, in the upper 80s to middle 90s for lower elevations and 70s to low 80s in the mountains.
Elevations above 11,000 feet will be in the 60s, but can quickly drop to the mid to upper 40s during a thunderstorm — plan ahead if hiking or camping. Southeastern Colorado will have high temperatures in the upper 90s and low 100s through Sunday.
The severe weather threat will remain fairly low as there is limited surface moisture to fuel big thunderstorms with large hail and possible tornadoes. Instead, the thunderstorms will primarily bring gusty winds of 50-60 mph and frequent lightning.
On Saturday there will be a greater risk for severe weather as slightly more humid air moves into eastern Colorado. The more humid conditions will not stick around very long.
Hot weather will hang around Sunday as winds shift and blow strong from the southwest. The heat, wind and drier air will increase fire danger over much of the state.
A cold front will arrive Sunday night and bring breezy and cooler weather for early next week. Rain chances will stay low as the cooler air will also be rather dry.
Best to enjoy the cool-down through next Wednesday as it will be followed by more heat as we head into the middle of June.
