Woman, horse killed after being struck by lightning in Douglas County

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. – A 37-year-old woman and her horse were killed after they were struck by lightning in Douglas County Sunday afternoon, South Metro Fire Rescue officials said late Sunday afternoon.

A 15-year-old girl also sustained serious injuries and was being treated for electrocution, the sheriff's office confirmed with Denver7. 

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said it happened in West Rainbow Creek Road and Cherokee Drive in Sedalia. No other details, including the condition of the juvenile, were released. 

The National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for northwestern Arapahoe, eastern Denver and western Adams counties at 3:55 p.m.

Up to 60 mile per hour winds gusts were possible as the storm moved northeast at 35 miles per hour.

The Sever Thunderstorm Warning is in effect until 4:15 p.m.
