“Van life” has become increasingly popular recently. People from all walks of life remodel old vans and turn them into recreational vehicles or even living quarters in which they can travel the world.

This kind of lifestyle is especially appealing now, as it provides a way to travel while still keeping a safe distance from others. And if you’re one of the many people working remotely these days, taking your home on the road also means you can take your home and office anyplace that’s accessible by car.

Volkswagen is making van life even easier by incorporating features for comfort, function and fun into the latest version of its Caddy California van.

The California has been around for more than three decades. Now, the Caddy, the smallest member of the California family, is getting a major makeover, as you can see in this announcement Volkswagen made on Twitter.

“The allrounder offers variable living, sleeping & storage space for everyday life or travel,” tweeted Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. “The highlights: panoramic roof, new comfortable bed, compact mini kitchen and digital innovations.”

“Its new name is program and it makes the California family complete,” sales director H. Löw remarked in another tweet describing some of the features.

The van provides a small pull-out kitchen with a single hob gas cooker, windscreen and shelf. It has a glass roof to give you that “sleeping under the stars” vibe.

Not only will it include a foldout bed with a mattress, but also a modular tent system that you can attach to the back of the van for even more sleeping and living space. It even comes with a camping table and chairs that stow away under the rear when you’re ready to roll.

The Caddy California will be available as a four-wheel-drive vehicle, in case you want to go off the beaten path, or with the standard front-wheel drive.

Look for the Caddy California to hit the road (and the market) in 2021.
