DENVER – Icy conditions created by a fast-moving storm continued to create problems for drivers Thursday morning.
There were multiple reports of crashes around the state as drivers struggled with slick roads.
The Colorado Department of Transportation said crews were treating roadways but icy conditions were expected to last until about 9 a.m.
CDOT started issuing travel warnings for drivers Wednesday evening as freezing rain and fog moved in.
“The storm is moving in faster than expected and has already created hazardous road conditions,” said a CDOT official in a press release. “We urge motorists to please stay off the roads if you can as icy conditions will exist.”
The National Weather Service in Boulder echoed the travel warning by tweeting drivers should try to stay off the roads Wednesday evening.

“We want people to understand the nature of this storm is one that could mean treacherous driving, and we are encouraging people if you don’t have to drive to not [do it], but [also] to absolutely be careful if you are,” CDOT spokeswoman Amy Ford told Denver7. “Even if the storm trails off through the morning commute, because there will be freezing conditions we could still see those hazardous conditions while driving in the morning.”
Ford added that this is a kind of storm that is not meant to be trifled with.
The Colorado State Patrol also issued a warning, advising drivers to stay home and off the roads.
Stay off the road, stay home. Ice is no respecter of vehicle, tires, or people. It's not worth the risk tonight.
