3 CSP Troopers have died on our roads since May 2015

DENVER – The death of Colorado State Trooper Cody Donahue, who was killed after he was reportedly hit by a truck driver on I-25, is the third fatality involving the department since May 2015.

Donahue's name was the latest to be added to the Officer Down Memorial page. The website also lists Trooper Jaimie Jursevics and Trooper Taylor Thyfault. 

Jursevics was struck and killed by a drunk driver on I-25 in November of 2015. Thyfault was hit and killed by a vehicle that was fleeing from other officers on Colorado Highway 66 back in May that same year.

The three troopers were all reportedly responding to separate and unrelated crashes when each were killed on the side of Colorado roads.

Trooper Donahue’s crash is still under investigation, even though the Douglas County Sheriff’s office released Noe Gamez-Ruiz, 41, from jail after he posted bond. He is the only suspect in the deadly crash. 

Gamez-Ruiz was arrested shortly after the crash, and was charged with careless driving resulting in death and failure to yield the right-of-way to an emergency vehicle 

Many sent their thoughts and prayers through social media. Some called attention to our state’s Move Over law.

Colorado’s Move Over law requires drivers to move over one lane when there is an emergency situation along the shoulder. Drivers should know that if they are unable to move over, the law says drivers must slow down significantly.

On Friday night, CSP Major Steve Garcia talked about Trooper deaths. He said, “This is becoming much too frequent in our community -- and quite frankly, it needs to stop.”

CSP shared a GoFundMe page for Trooper Donahue’s family. The 11-year Veteran of the Colorado State Patrol leaves behind two young daughters and a wife.
