A 20-year-old suspected of DUI and running a red light has been arrested following a fatal five-vehicle crash Wednesday morning on Highway 85, the Commerce City Police Department said.

One person died in the crash, which happened near the line between Commerce City and Brighton, and multiple others were brought to a hospital.

All lanes of Highway 85 near E. 120th Avenue were closed for the investigation Wednesday morning.

According to the police department, officers believe the at-fault driver ran a red light at E. 120th Avenue while traveling southbound on Highway 85, hitting another driver who was headed eastbound with a green light. That other driver, identified as a 50-year-old, was ejected from their vehicle and died at the scene, police said.

Several other cars were involved in secondary crashes, police said.

All of the other drivers were transported to a hospital.

Police said the 20-year-old driver accused of running the red light was arrested and is believed to have been driving under the influence. They face both DUI and vehicular homicide charges. They have not been identified.

Drivers were asked to avoid the area. Denver7 Traffic Expert Jayson Luber recommended taking Brighton Road to the west or I-76 and Sable to the east.
