NEW YORK (AP) — Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Tim Howard has been suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount for profane language directed toward a fan during a game against Sporting Kansas City and an altercation with a fan following the match.

The longtime U.S. national team star was penalized Friday, five days after Colorado's 3-1 loss at Sporting on Sunday.

In a statement posted on the Colorado Rapids website, officials said the goalkeeper made and "unfortunate and regrettable mistake for which he is being disciplined by MLS," adding:

"While this is out of character for Tim, we do not condone these actions. We accept the league’s decision and look forward to moving past this. The incidents that took place during our match at Sporting Kansas City last weekend do not represent the Colorado Rapids Soccer Club or Tim’s character and beliefs, on and off the pitch."

Team officials went on to say the team, along with 22 other Major League Soccer clubs, have taken the pledge with the “Don’t Cross the Line” campaign, which aims to treat everyone at games with dignity and respect.
