Peyton Manning had the cast removed from his injured foot Wednesday, and is now wearing a walking boot hoping get healthy soon.
Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said, “We're trying to get him healthy where he can get back on the field and get to work with us. Today the cast came off, but the boot is on. The boot is going to stay on, it's my understanding, until Friday or Saturday. With the boot, he can go through rehab. With the cast, he couldn't. That's what he's doing right now, and the next step will be when that comes off for good.”
Manning had a consultation with Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte, N.C. on Nov. 23 that led to the walking cast being placed on his foot. He talked to denverbroncos.com about the meeting.
"Everybody wants to know what he said. He said I have an injured foot. Everybody said, 'Well, when did he say it's going to get better?' When it heals. Some earth-shattering medical information there," Manning said.
Peyton also told the Broncos website about the difference between a partial tear of the plantar fascia and a full tear.
"I think it's kind of like being a little bit pregnant. Either you are or you aren't," Manning said. "He [Anderson] kind of says that you can call it a tear. I'm not smart enough to follow all the medical jargon, but he said the important part was torn, so he'd probably call it a full tear -- or a tear, I guess."
There was a report on a national sports website today that said the Broncos had decided on Brock Osweiler as starting quarterback for the rest of the season, barring injury or bad performance. Kubiak addressed that report today.
“I didn't know anything about that," the coach said. "Listen, like I told you guys before, we're totally committed to getting our quarterback—getting Peyton healthy and getting him back. Nothing has changed. Nothing has changed with where we're headed this week. Brock is our starter this week, and we're all-in getting ready for San Diego. We are week-to-week and doing everything we can to win the next football game. Absolutely nothing has changed.”
Brock Osweiler said he had not been told anything by the Broncos except what the plan is for this week.
“We have not had any conversation like that," said Osweiler. "Like I just said, all I know is that I'm the starter this week versus San Diego. That's what I'm focused on. When next week comes, we'll look at next week.”
