DENVER – Former Colorado Buffalo and Carolina Panther Rae Carruth opened up to a Charlotte, N.C. TV station about his conspiracy to murder his pregnant girlfriend after more than a dozen years in prison.
Carruth, a former football standout from CU who was picked in the first round of the 1997 NFL draft, is set to be released in October from a North Carolina prison after spending 17 years there.
In the letter to WBTV and subsequent conversations, Carruth said he accepted responsibility for hiring two men to kill his girlfriend, who was pregnant at the time, in 1999.
The woman, Cherica Adams, died about a month after two men hired by Carruth shot her.
Their son has been raised by a family member, but Carruth says he wants custody of his child once he’s released.
