DENVER -- Music intersects with baseball in ways never imaginable a century ago.
Consider the story of diminutive Juan Pierre. He broke into professional baseball as a fourth outfielder on a lacking Class-A team for the Rockies. After a trade to the Marlins -- he was the necessary sweetener to make the Mike Hampton three-way deal go through -- Pierre played in the World Series in 2003. Perhaps you remember. Florida stunned the Yankees, relying on small ball.
Jay-Z sat at Yankee Stadium watching Pierre run wild on New York. Not long after the iconic rapper released "DeJa Vu" with the lyrics, "I used to run base like Juan Pierre. Now, I run the bass hi-hat and the snare."
