ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Phillip Lindsay threw a punch. A week later, the NFL hit him in the pocketbook.
The Broncos rookie was fined $10,026 for unnecessary roughness against the Ravens. Lindsay will appeal. (If he's fortunate, one of his veteran teammates will help him pay the penalty).
On a weird play, Lindsay reacted to a threat against teammates. Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs smashed into quarterback Case Keenum, jarring the ball loose. Right tackle Jared Veldheer recovered it, then absorbed a spear from Marlon Humphrey after multiple players insisted the whistle had blown. Lindsay saw the aggression and reacted.
He ended up on the ground and either swinging to get a player off him or throwing a punch. The refs saw the latter. Lindsay was ejected for the first time in his life, he told Denver7. He said he learned his lesson, that he has to "be available to my team."
Though his outing was brief, Lindsay learned from his first road game. As did teammates who believe they are ready to change the narrative after spending so many Sundays with the hazards flashing.
"It's tough out there," Lindsay said. "We have to be physical and be ready to bang."
