DENVER -- Given the way opponents ran on them last season, the Broncos remain in a rush to reshape their defensive line. They figure to make multiple moves to bolster a unit that allowed 130.3 yards per game on the ground a year ago.
While remaining hopeful of landing veteran Earl Mitchell after an encouraging visit Wednesday, the Broncos added depth Friday, signing defensive end Bobby Richardson.
Richardson, 24, started 11 games for the New Orleans Saints in 2015 after making the team as an undrafted free agent. Richardson posted 40 tackles, an interception and a half sack. At 6-3, 286 pounds, he provides size and versatility in his technique to challenge for a roster spot. Richardson bounced around last season, signed to practice squads with the Kansas City Chiefs, Washington Redskins and Saints.
Denver is looking to upgrade upfront. The Broncos struggled to stop rushing attacks as nose tackle Sylvester Williams failed to build off his 2015 season and rookie Adam Gotsis proved undersized, leaving Jared Crick to expand into an every-down role when he was signed to be a pass rusher.
The Broncos' meeting with Mitchell went well. Coach Vance Joseph wants Mitchell in Denver after praising his effort and attitude in Miami last season.
