CENTENNIAL -- The Broncos shaved their roster by 11 players on Monday with four cuts remaining before the day's end.
Quarterback Mark Sanchez and punter Britton Colquitt were not among them. For now.
Sanchez remains in jeopardy because of his $4.5 million contract the conditional seventh-round draft pick attached to his trade if he makes the team. The Broncos approached Colquitt about taking a pay cut for the second straight season. They want him to make $1.6 million, or half of his current salary. The Broncos have leverage because of the performance of rookie punter Riley Dixon, a seventh-round draft choice.
Denver has yet to approach Sanchez about a pay cut. That could happen over the next few days leading into Thursday's preseason finale at Arizona. Sanchez has enjoyed his time in Denver, and remains open-minded about several potential scenarios. But, his future remains uncertain.
Without a pay cut, it's hard to see Sanchez making the team. But he could choose to stand firm, hoping for a trade. Dallas is in the market for a veteran following Tony Romo's back injury. Sanchez is the only quarterback on the Broncos roster who has thrown a pass in an NFL game. If Sanchez is not kept, the Broncos are likely to bring in a veteran to take snaps on Thursday. T.J. Yates is among the street free agents who would profile for that job.
