SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- For the first time Thursday, linebacker Brandon Marshall learned how the Broncos viewed his decision to kneel for the national anthem last season.
As part of a followup question about recent player protests by Seattle's Michael Bennett and Oakland's Marshawn Lynch, Elway praised Marshall for following up with action in the community. Marshall appreciated it.
"It felt great!" Marshall told Denver7. "I honestly never knew how the organization felt about what I did."
Elway said he respects the players' decisionsto protest as long as it doesn't interfere with the team's goal to win a championship. His message was for players to understand how their stance might impact their teammates. In the case of Marshall, Elway appreciated how he handled the situation as he raised awareness for social causes and created dialogue with the Denver police over their training methods.
"Brandon made a point last year, but he carried it forward. He just didn't make a stand on the field. He went out in the community and did something and talked to different people," Elway said. "He talked to law enforcement and got involved. I was proud of Brandon. Not only did he show his support but he went out and did something in the community."
