EXCLUSIVE: Broncos' Barbre excited about opportunity to compete for starting job

CENTENNIAL, Colo. -- Allen Barbre can be forgiven for his distraction.

"I am trying to get packed and get to the airport," the Broncos' newest offensive lineman told Denver7 on Wednesday.

Barbre began his day believing he had been released. That was his understanding of how his solid career with the Philadelphia Eagles would come to a close. Then, a few hours later, everything changed. He was not a free agent. He was a Denver Bronco. Not a bad landing place. He arrives on Thursday determined to compete with Max Garcia for the starting left guard spot.

"It's been a roller-coaster ride, a whirlwind," Barbre said. "I am excited. I know the Broncos are a winning organization. I can't wait to get there and meet the guys."

Barbre started 28 games at left guard the past two seasons. He also has experience at left tackle. He admitted he's most comfortable on the left side, and doesn't see any reason why he can't hit the ground running.

"I don't see why not. I have played in multiple systems. I know what they are trying to do there. It's up to me to pick up the terminology quickly," said Barbre, acquired for a conditional seventh-round pick in 2019. "But I am excited to get there. This is a great opportunity."

The 33-year-old began his career in Green Bay as a fourth round pick in 2007. He logged two years with the Seahawks, then played the last four seasons in Philadelphia, starting 29 games.
