Archie Manning: Great day for our family

When Denver Broncos' quarterback Peyton Manning gave his retirement speech, several members of his family were there -- his parents, his wife and kids and his brother Cooper.

After the speech, Manning's father, former NFL quarterback Archie Manning told Broncos TV that he and his wife were "certainly proud" and called it a "great day for our family."

Archie said Peyton made the decision to retire on his own.

He said when Peyton was getting recruited by 100 colleges, "We felt like he was mature enough to make his own decision there, so I said, 'If I didn’t try to influence him when he was 17 years old, I’m not going to influence him when he’s 39 years old,'" Archie explained.

Archie said he felt that, "Peyton’s pretty good at figuring things out."

He said Peyton analyzes things, takes his time with it, prays and talks to other people.

"He does his due diligence," Archie said. "He came to the conclusion that it’s time and that’s the way it should be."

"We’ll count out blessings for the long career he had, and the success he had," Archie said. "As his parents, we’re most appreciative of the type of person he’s been and the people he’s touched."

Archie admitted that he'll miss watching Peyton play on Sundays.

"We’ll just miss seeing him, he was part of our ritual on Sunday afternoons," Archie said. "We're gonna pull for the Giants. We don’t want to sound greedy, but we need another Super Bowl ring."
