DENVER – The Colorado Avalanche have traded Tyson Barrie, Alexander Kerfoot and a sixth-round pick in the 2020 draft to the Toronto Maple Leafs for forward Nazem Kadri, defenseman Calle Rosen and a third-round pick in next year’s draft.
The trade was not unexpected after the arrivals of Samuel Girard and Cale Makar and after the Avalanche drafted Bowen Byram, as Barrie’s contract was set to expire after next season, Avs Executive Vice President and General Manager Joe Sakic said.
Kadri, 28, was the seventh-overall pick for the Maple Leafs in the 2009 draft. He tallied 44 points last season in 73 games last season after back-to-back 30-goal seasons over the two years prior.
“Nazem is a proven goal scorer and a fierce competitor who plays in all situations,” Sakic said. “He is under contract for the next three seasons and will immediately fit right in as our second-line center and improve our scoring depth. Calle is a young defenseman with upside who has played in the AHL and has also seen some NHL time over the last two years.”
Barrie leaves the Avs as the franchise’s all-time leader among defensemen in goals, assists and points.
Rosen, 25, played four games for the Maple Leafs this past season and has spent time with the team’s AHL club.
“We would like to thank Tyson for all he has done both on and off the ice for the Avalanche organization,” Sakic said in a statement. “He certainly made an impact not only with his play but with his charitable work in the local community. We would also like to thank Alexander for his two seasons, as he helped our turnaround in making the playoffs the last two years.”
The Avalanche also on Monday agreed to terms with three players: a four-hear deal for forward Joonas Donskoi, a two-year deal with forward Pierre-Edouard Bellemare and a one-year deal for veteran forward Colin Wilson.
