Our lives have changed drastically in the wake of the novel coronavirus pandemic. As people everywhere adjust to their new circumstances, stress seems to be at an all-time high. If you’re a parent and are feeling overwhelmed by all the new and unique challenges presented by this global crisis, you’re not alone.

The balancing act required to take care of your kids and help them with e-learning, all while keeping up with work responsibilities or dealing with job loss can be enough to put any mom or dad over the edge. If you’re struggling to keep it all together during this difficult time, Elmo’s dad, Louie, has a great public service announcement to lift your spirits.

In “A Moment to Yourself,” the “Sesame Street” character reminds us to all be a little kinder and gentler with ourselves during this unprecedented time. Check it out from the show’s YouTube channel below:

The short video starts with a moment that all parents can relate to: as soon as Louie begins talking to his audience, Elmo interjects with a request for his dad to help him build a pillow fort. Louie says that getting to spend more time with your children during this unique time is great, but notes that it can also be overwhelming.

“Remember, though, it’s important to take some time for yourself,” he instructs. “You know, take care of you.”

He then gives some suggestions on how parents can practice self-care, such as listening to a favorite song, stretching or just taking a moment for a deep breath.

“We are all doing the best we can, and that is okay,” Louie says.

That’s a great message to remember and it’s not the only way “Sesame Street” has been trying to help parents during this period. This week, the show also produced a special episode that showed favorite characters, including Elmo and Louie, practicing self quarantining and talking to their friends via video chat.

Sesame Workshop

Sesame Street: Elmo’s Playdate” aired across seven networks on April 14 and showed kids (and parents) how much fun they can still have with their pals despite not being able to physically be with them.

Sesame Workshop has also launched a new website, sesamestreet.org/caring, to help support families and kids during the COVID-19 health crisis. The site offers engaging materials like original new videos, printable coloring pages and links to download hundreds of “Sesame Street” e-books for free. There’s even a page of tips aimed at helping parents manage their stress right now.

No matter how you’re feeling, it’s helpful to remember the words Louie parted with in his PSA to fellow parents, “Hang in there and keep up the great work.”
