D’Angelo, the Grammy-winning singer and songwriter, has reportedly died.

In a statement to Variety, D'Angelo's family said the singer died after a "prolonged and courageous battle with cancer."

"We are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14th, 2025," the statement says. "We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind."

Born Michael Eugene Archer on Feb. 11, 1974, in Richmond, Virginia, D’Angelo rose to fame in the mid-1990s. His debut album, Brown Sugar, was released in 1995 to both critical and commercial success.

His second album, Voodoo, won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album and featured the hit single “Untitled (How Does It Feel).” The music video, in which D'Angelo appeared naked, became one of the most recognizable of its era.

After a lengthy hiatus, D'Angelo returned in 2014 with Black Messiah, an album praised for its political urgency and musical depth, earning another Grammy for Best R&B Album.

D'Angelo was 51 years old. He is survived by his two sons and a daughter.
