Peak 2 Fire now 85 percent contained, still 84 acres in size

DENVER (AP) – Firefighters have been able to build containment lines around about half the wildfire that forced the evacuation of hundreds of people near Breckenridge.

The Peak Two Fire has not spread since it broke out Wednesday and was still less than a square mile (about one-third square kilometer) Sunday. Fire managers say they’re looking for ways to get rid of fuels to help protect the town, its ski area and formerly evacuated homes from future fires.

Evacuations and closures

Fire officials on Sunday afternoon removed the pre-evacuation status of the Peak 2 Fire.

"The areas no longer in pre-evacuation status are Peak 7 and west of Colorado Highway-9 from the south boundary of Cucumber Gulch and Valley Brook to the north boundary of the Iron Springs construction site," said a deputy with the Summit County Sheriff's Office.

But deputies warned residents from the Peak 7 subdivision not to discard credentials given to them at the checkpoint site in the event that the neighborhood needs to re-evacuated. Residents were also told to remove flagging tape left on their properties by firefighters. A public information line is available for anyone with any questions at (970) 668-9730.

Peaks Trail, Gold Hill, Wheeler, Miners Creek trails remain closed to the public. The same can be said for parts of the Colorado Trail where overlap occurs with trail closures in the area. Miners Creek Road is closed, Pechota said.

Stage 1 fire restrictions remain in place for the entire White River National forest as well as Bureau of Land Management-administered lands and unincorporated private lands in Eagle, Garfield, Mesa, Rio Blanco, Pitkin and Summit counties. To learn more about Stage 1 fire restrictions, click here.

A total of 406 firefighters are working to contain the Peak 2 Fire located two miles south of Frisco.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
