RIDGWAY, Colo. -- An 8-year-old girl on the Western Slope had an amazing ride during the mutton busting competition at the Ouray County Labor Day Rodeo.
Gentry Godbey was riding backwards on a sheep as the animal raced across the dirt arena.
Home video shows the sheep falling, rolling and getting back up and Gentry held on through it all. She managed to stay on the sheep as it raced around the arena until someone grabbed Gentry and pulled her off.
"This was an extreme mutton busting ride," Gentry's mother, Beth Godbey, told Denver7.
"She did it once [mutton busting] when she was really tiny, but she decided it was dumb to do so because, 'you fall off every time,'" Beth said of her daughter.
But when Gentry's brothers did it this year, Gentry decided to do, too, Beth said.
Even the announcers were impressed with Gentry's ride.
"The announcers said, 'You bull riders need to take note of Gentry Godbey,'" Beth said.
How did Gentry manage stay on?
"Sheer will, I think, and toughness," Beth said. "She didn't want anyone to know her secret, but she said it was jiu jitsu."
