A southern California neighborhood is in shock and horror after the discovery of five puppies buried at a church.

A pastor at First Free Will Baptist Church in the city of Chula Visa, Calif., told our ABC affiliate KGTV (10News) in San Diego he was walking the grounds last Friday when he smelled something strange.

He said he followed the scent to a stairwell and then noticed the dirt underneath it was dug up. The pastor contacted Chula Vista police, and officers later told him that five puppies were found dead.

A police official told 10News the five puppies appeared to be the same breed and from the same litter.

Richard Dibble, who lives near the church, said, "Five puppies? That's totally insane. It is weird, but it's also sad because puppies are dead. Somebody should have called Animal Control, but they didn't."

Police are unsure if the dogs died from an illness or if a person was responsible for their deaths.
