Police in Maryland say two suspects have been taken into custody after a police officer was shot outside the Prince George's County headquarters Sunday afternoon.

The injured officer is in critical condition, according to our ABC affiliate WJLA-TV in Washington, D.C

Three others were shot, in addition to the PGPD officer, according to sources close to a WJLA reporter. The circumstances involving the shooting are unclear at this time, but it does not appear the incident was an attack on police, WJLA said.

Police posted a message on Twitter asking residents to avoid the area and to stay inside.

Prince George's County Assistant Fire Chief Alan Doubleday told The Washington Post that one person was transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound and a second person was transported by police.

Police officials did not immediately respond to messages from The Associated Press.

This is a developing story. Check back later for updates.
