A U.S. military official says a U.S. serviceman was killed in Iraq when militants from the Islamic State group attacked, penetrating Kurdish Peshmerga forces.
The official says the American adviser was two to three miles behind the Peshmerga front line.
Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook says the serviceman was killed near Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city. It's been in the hands of IS militants since they overran large swaths of northern and western Iraq in the summer of 2014.
