FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Fort Collins Police says one of their own used what they say is standard procedure when an officer slammed a woman to the ground in order to subdue her during an arrest Thursday evening.
The scuffle, which was recorded on video and uploaded to Snapchat, shows a Fort Collins Police Services officer slamming a woman to the ground outside the Bondi Beach Bar the evening of April 6.
In a statement sent to Denver7, Fort Collins Police Services Sgt. Dean Cunningham said officers were at the scene responding to a dispute between two men when Michaella Surat, 22, shoulder-checked a bouncer and an officer, then tried to pull her boyfriend out of the area.
The officers told her that her boyfriend was not free to leave but that she could go. Surat remained at the scene, at which time officers said "she physically obstructed and struck an officer."
The video does not show anything but the officer slamming her to the ground.
"Officers used a standard arrest control to subdue her," Cunningham said.
Suran was arrested and booked into the Larimer County Jail on charges of third-degree assault and obstructing a peace officer.
Cunningham said a supervisor is reviewing whether the officer's actions during the arrest fell within the department's policy and training.
