PLATTEVILLE, Colo. – It’s March in Colorado and that can only mean one thing: “Hatch madness” will soon be upon us!

Since mid-February, the bald eagle nest at Xcel Energy’s Fort St. Vrain Station in Platteville has seen some nesting activity and mama eagle has been patiently keeping a close watch on not one, not two, but three eggs — even as several snowstorms have dumped several inches of snow on the nest.

On Wednesday, the utility company welcomed spring by tweeting a 7 second video of the nest, telling viewers their first bald eaglet would hatch “any moment now.”

Officials say the pair of bald eagles typically return to their nests in the fall and raise eggs from February to June. The eagles have used the nest for years, and the Colorado Division of Wildlife bands the offspring.

The 6x5 foot nest sits in a cottonwood tree close to the Xcel plant.
