More than 300 Fourth of July weekend arrests for drunken driving

Posted

DENVER -- Newly released state statistics show authorities arrested more drivers on suspicion of driving intoxicated during this year's Fourth of July weekend than in 2015.

The Denver Post reports that 312 drivers were arrested from July 1 through July 5, up from the 288 arrests counted during the same time last year.

More than 90 agencies participated in the Colorado Department of Transportation's "Heat is On" campaign during this year's Fourth of July weekend. The heightened enforcement period is aimed at preventing people who have been drinking during the holiday from getting behind the wheel.

The next DUI crackdown period will run from Aug. 19 to Sept. 6, in time for Labor Day.
