Fire damages Colorado's oldest church

Posted

A fire has damaged Colorado's oldest church.

The fire began in the rear of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church Tuesday night, according to the Alamosa Valley Courier.

The newspaper said the Colorado Bureau of Investigation is helping in the fire investigation.

The church's website says the church was dedicated in 1863.

The website says a fire destroyed the church on Ash Wednesday in 1926. This latest fire happened on Ash Wednesday eve.

The church is in Conejos. Many see the church while visiting Antonito on the Cumbres & Toltec Steam Train.
