CASTLE ROCK, Colo. -- A Castle Pines woman is concerned her effort to protest federal immigration policy could land her in jail.
Shauna Johnson faces a misdemeanor charge after a chalk art display in front of Republican Congressman Ken Buck’s office in Castle Rock regarding the Trump administration's policy of separating immigrant children from their families at the border.
"I wrote in chalk, 'Stop putting kids in cages Ken Buck, love Jesus and a cross,'" said Johnson.
The building’s management called the Douglas County Sheriff’s office after the incident. Deputies issued the misdemeanor because the office was located on private property. A spokesperson also expressed concern the woman would return and cause further disruption.
"I'm scared because I've never been threatened or intimidated like this before in my life. No one has ever told me they were going to put me in jail," Johnson said. "I drive on cruise control because I don't want to get a speeding ticket."
While the legalities are being debated, Buck's spokesperson sent Denver7 a statement: "Congressman Buck appreciates civic engagement and encourages his constituents to voice their opinions respectfully."
Johnson maintains this is not about her plight but about the moral issues facing immigrant families.
"As an American I have the right to free speech. And in all honesty, I feel like all they're trying to do is bully me into being quiet about a very serious issue," said Johnson.
