DENVER (AP) — Denver voters will decide on the Nov. 7 ballot if most new buildings should be required to have gardens, solar panels or other green components covering a portion of the roofs.

The Denver Post reports the Denver Green Roof Initiative cleared the petition threshold last week as the Denver Elections Division verified 4,771 signatures came from valid city voters.

Should voters approve the ballot measure, new buildings of at least 25,000 square feet (2322.5 sq. meters) would be required to cover at least 20 percent of the roof's surface with the green features depending on the building's size. Replacing roofs on existing buildings could also trigger the requirement.

Developers and those with other building interests are expected to oppose the measure because of the costs it would impose.
